Dr. Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana, M.A. is the first woman of African descent elected as a Member of the European Parliament for Germany (Green/EFA). She is Co-President of European Parliament Anti-Racism Diversity Intergroup (ARDI). She was the first African Woman to be elected as a city councillor in her home town of Erlangen (Bavaria-Germany) and the Vice-President of "The Association of the elected Representatives of African descent in Germany". As councillor she inaugurated the "International Week against Racism" (2009), helped establish the "Schools against racism, schools with courage" programme in Ohm High School (2013) and created the "Black History Weeks" in the framework of the UN Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), promoting "recognition, justice and development" among people of African descent. ln 2009 the German government honored her with the Helene Weber Prize, in recognition of her commitment to human rights, integration and the fight against gender based violence in Germany, particularly against female genital mutilation, discrimination and racism. Dr. Herzberger-Fofana has worked tirelessly for the development of trust and understanding between different communities and for the recognition and inclusion of Afro-German History within German society.
